I just finished the movie My Fair Lady. What a wonderful movie!! I mean, it could not have been anything less than PERFECT considering it starred Audrey Hepburn, now could it? Well, anyway, I strongly reccomend it!!
I was particularly fascinated by one of the main characters, Proffessor Higgins. By all outward appearances, he is a gentleman. He is clever, witty, wealthy, well-mannered, well-educated and relatively handsome (though too old for me!:). The perfect guy, right? wrong! About half way through the movie, we see a whole new side of our not-so-impressive gentleman. As poor Elisa DoLittle discovers the hard way, he is a very selfish, rude person, however grammatically correct! His point of view is limited to...well, himself. As I continued to watch his behvior in this hysterical film, I was reminded of my friend Ryan, who, sufficient to say, is five years old! But as I continued to watch, I was reminded of another person who acts like that, and quite often. Me. (as shocking as it may be that I, Hillary Greening am not perfect ;) In all seriousness, though, I have to wonder...how often, do we, as humans, behave gracefully and politely, but our hearts are in the wrong? How often do we see a situation with only one person on our minds...me, myself and I. (well, I guess that's three, huh? sort of....you know what I mean, right?)
"...you are the ones who justify yourselves as mean, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable to God." Luke 16:15
There you have it. Right there in the scriptures. I have heard this so many times, but I don't think we can here it enough...GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART!!! He doesn't care about anything but our HEART! Yes, he does want us to be well-mannered and graceful, but if it's all a facade, what's the point?
